It went pretty well, with a couple of hitches, so I'll see if I can explain
what I figured out in an easy way to follow:

So, the initial part is to use Preware's saved patch list (in Preware's
menu). Do a save, which will save all the stuff you've installed in
Preware.

Then you'll need to have the Save/Restore homebrew app. Run that and choose
Save Application data. Make sure everything is selected and do a save
selected.

Now connect your phone to your PC via USB and transfer the entire
saverestore folder to your PC.

Now you can doctor, or get your replacement Pre, etc. and you can do the
following:

If you're getting a replacement Pre, especially a new one, make sure you are
on the latest version, 1.4.5! I forgot about this initially, but it really
should be the first thing you update!

Now, install Preware via WebOSQuickInstall. Also make sure to install
Unzip, since save/restore needs this to unzip the zip files that it uses as
archived settings.

Go into Save/Restore, make sure everything is selected, and do a restore
selected. This will load all the saved patches and other Preware settings
from your old phone (or old setup before doctoring).

Now you can go into Preware again, go to the Saved Package List, and you
should see a list of all your old patches and homebrew apps. You can try
doing an Install All and you may be lucky, it may be able to install
everything without issue. I wasn't quite as lucky. I had a few things that
would not install. Some were simply patches that caused errors, but others
were a patch and some homebrew apps that were not in Preware to begin with
and so when Preware tried to install them, it just kept trying and went on
for long periods without stopping, so I finally had to close preware. You
can actually delete these from your list of saved packages, but I found that
it didn't always recognize this right away, and even if it did, when I tried
to do an install all and it came up with an error, I couldn't quite figure
out what patch was causing it, so eventually had to install about a third of
the remaining patches individually. But just about all of them did install.

By the way, the apps and patch that didn't install are as follows:

App: NaNplayer, which is a beta music player that Palm hasn't approved for
the app catalog yet, and which isn't available via homebrew either. IE it's
a private beta.

App: Free Music Ringtones: this used to be in the app catalog, which is what
my Preware was pointing to, but wasn't able to find it since it's not there
anymore. I believe you can get this app through Homebrew now, though.

Patch: Inverted keyboard brightness (or something like that): this is a nice
patch that sets the keyboard brightness to the inverse of the screen
brightness. In any case, it seems that patches that are not in Preware's
catalog, but which you installed manually, Preware doesn't really know what
to do with, so it just keeps trying to install them.

Anyway, I hope this stuff is helpful for folks. I ended up uninstalling and
reinstalling stuff a bunch of times as I wanted to do it as "cleanly" as
possible. While it wasn't the smoothest of operations, if you play with it
a bit, it does work and ends up saving you a lot of time and effort in the
long haul...
