You know thats the part that really touched me. The part that he says "I wish you could all be like me except for these chains". That really touched me because I realised that Paul understood something, he understood that knowing Christ is the greatest thing we can ever have. He was speaking before the whose who of the city and he was basically saying he was to be more envied than all of them because of Christ!
How many times do we get around family members who do not know God and immediately we begin to feel inferior. Oh we get around our old friends from High School or Varsity who do not acknowledge God and all the sudden we begin to feel like knowing God is not that much of a big deal but Paul said in Acts 26:29"Short time or long - I pray God that not only you but all who are listening to me today may become what I am, except for these chains". Paul said this Philipians 3:7-9 " But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ. Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ, And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith: That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death; May that be our conviction today no matter what, that our relationship with God is of the utmost importance. paul said I count everything as loss in comparison to Christ.
