I bought it because a) I hadn't looked too closely at Replicant's list of  
supported devices, b) Most of the ones it supports are outdated anyways and I  
don't even think they were available where I bought the device, and c) Before  
I knew about free software I really wanted an iPhone, and the LG Optimus G  
looks the most like an iPhone of any phone I could find.
