It is true that certain Scientology technical terms remain unaltered in the translations. In German translations, an Overt or Withhold is still an Overt or Withhold; same with lock, secondary, straightwire, Itsa (as in itsa line), etc. Other terms, such as Case Supervisor (Fallueberwacher), have been properly translated, though. The Scientologists are very careful and fastidious when it comes to translations. I used to be an LRH translator for my local translations unit. A translation would pass through so many many hands before being released. When something is to be translated you have a local translations unit (may even be several in each country, if there are several Class V orgs). You have the original translator who does the initial translation. Then you've got the side-checker who checks it and checks if the translation would translate back into the original language and still retain the same meaning. Then you've got the editor who checks the whole thing once more. Then you've got the proof reader. All these steps are done within the local translations unit. Then it is sent to the continental translations unit (in the case of Europe that unit would be the Translations Unit Europe in CLO EU in Copenhagen), and the Language i/c (in charge) for that particular language would receive the translati on and they'd check it, too. And, if I'm not mistaken, the finished translation (after having gone through so many hands and checked and double checked) would go to AVC (Authorization, Verification and Correction) - a unit within RTC (Religious Technology Center). They would do the final check before approving it. Despite the tremendous care that went into each translation, I would still always opt for the original English LRH lectures at the org's bookstore. In the Academy I'd study the tapes in English rather than in German, even though it would take me a lot of extra time to look up words. Despite German being my native tongue, I would always find it much easier to grasp the concepts presented in the tape when listening to it in the original English. Back to TROM: I think that certain terms are so basic and vital that I wouldn't dare touch them lest their full meaning is lost in translation. If, for instance, the term 'to know' is not precisely translated (or won't translate precisely), how on earth could one then proceed and work on the 'to know' goals package and hope to erase it? I think it's best to err on the side of caution in these matters. Well, that's my two cents.
