You are misunderstanding something here, Dave.  This is discussed a
whole lot in Protestant circles.  It has been a major point of division
among Protestants.  I posted previously about this so I'm not sure why
you would make such a comment.  The doctrine of predestination per
Calvinism explains it one way while Arminians explain it another way.
Both of these viewpoints are considered within orthodoxy.  Open theism
is another viewpoint, but it is not considered Orthodox.  Search on
these terms (Calvinism, Arminianism, Open Theism, Pelagianism) and you
will find lots of debate among Protestants about this.

With regard to water baptism, do you understand that the John 3 passage
is the only passage that would force your viewpoint?  If I interpret
water there not to refer to baptism, then there are no passages in
Scripture that would necessitate water baptism in order for salvation.
Do you recognize that?

By the way, have you ever studied the Quaker argument for why water
baptism is Jewish and should not be practiced at all by Christians?
