DAVEH:  Let me see if I understand what you are saying, Perry.  Your folks may not be very good parents unless they were to forever torture you with physical pain if you fail to accept Jesus.  Look at it another way.....if your kids (or perhaps children of your pastor) did not want to adopt Christianity as you presented it to them, you would would want them to be (forever) physically tortured for their lack of following your advice.   Is that how you feel a parent should be?

Even if/when your kids disappoint you in their lack of judgment, or in whatever other way you may think of....is it your will that they be forever punitively tortured for that failure?

Note......I am not talking about God.  I am talking about you as a parent, or your parents....or perhaps your Christian friends who may be parents of those who've strayed.   Do you think we should try to become like (as Mt 5:48 suggests) God, Perry?   If so, then should parents adopt a little harsher paradigm when dealing with wayward children?  What imperfect parent would want that to happen to their children, despite their transgressive actions?  Other than parents who are mentally unbalanced, or are truly under Satan's influence, I simply can't think any loving and merciful parent would want to do that to their children for their foibles.

So Perry.....getting back to God....do you really think a Perfect Parent would want to eternally torture their wayward children?  To me.....that is illogical.

Dave, God is perfect, your parents are not. His ways are not their ways...His thoughts are not their thoughts. They are fallen in nature, He is not. He is the creator, they are the created. He is eternal, omniscient, and omnipresent, they are not. To assign them the same traits and character is unbiblical and illogical.

DAVEH:  If I were to fill in the blank G.....I'd say *God thinks like _a parent_*.  In my opinion, God is quintessentially the ultimate parent.  For him to do something contrary to what a parent would do....defies my perception of the Lord's love and mercy.

I think one of the biggest /problems /(if that is the proper
word to use) I have with Protestantism is their view of hell and
damnation.  I've said it before, but for some of you who are a bit
new to TT, I'll give you a brief explanation.  It seems to me that
Protestants are far too eager to toss those who don't agree with
their perspective of religion on the ash heap of hell, so to
speak.  Or rather, they seem to pleasure in the thought that God
will forever punitively torture those who fail to walk that narrow
path and enter the strait gate.  I just don't feel comfortable
believing in a God who relishes torture, Lance.  I prefer to
believe God is loving, merciful and would that all his creation
    benefit from their existence.
