Once you have heard them both, it is easy to recognize the voices.

Caroline:
It's something Peter did not get even though he stood beside the living and breathing Jesus.
Matthew 16, Jesus asks Peter who he is and Peter says you're the Christ, the Son of the Living God. Jesus commends him and said "this was not revealed to you by man, but by my Father in heaven."
A few short verses later, Jesus talks about his coming death and resurrection. Peter said, "Never Lord! This shall never happen to you". Jesus rebukes Peter saying, "Get behind me, Satan!"  So one incident, Peter is hearing from God. Then he is hearing from Satan.

jt: The above happened under the law and before the "indwelling" of the Holy Spirit.  He was with them (in Jesus) but He was not yet in them (the disciples)
Even after receiving the Spirit in Pentecost, Peter still goofs in his choices. In Acts, we learn that Peter sees a vision and goes to Cornelius house and recognizes that Gentiles have been accepted by God. Yet Paul complained about Peter avoiding Gentile believers when men from James came down from Jerusalem and so led Jewish believers astray.

jt: The above wasn't hearing the wrong voice so much as yeilding to a man-pleasing spirit which apparently was part of his character at the start.  His repentance and growth in grace is apparent by what he has written.

Oh, I could go on forever of men who confused the voices of God and Satan. Ask anyone who has studied Martin Luther's writings! Yup, the guy who broke us free from the Catholic church with his sola fide and sola scriptura had major issues.

jt: Everyone has major issues - if they are human.  The answer is to have our senses exercised to discern the difference between good and evil.  Easy to say, not so easy to do especially when Satan comes with his
angel of light religious hat on.

So, Terry, repent ye of this proud and false belief ere you also be dragged away into deception. None of us here are greater than Peter or Luther. Love,  Caroline

jt: I must have missed the "proud and false belief" - Terry's senses have had some good instruction in the prison system and this along with the every day tutoring of the Holy Spirit puts him in good stead so what belief of his are you calling "proud and false?" Caroline.   judyt
