Faith in Christ removes the problem of sin.  There is nothing for the Holy Spirit to do in the life of the believer, except reveal to him the righteousness of Christ, causing him to walk in it.  The concept that the Holy Spirit is working to convict believers of various sins, such as stealing, lust, covetousness, etc. is dangerous.

jt: Why do you see this as dangerous David?  Being conformed to the "image of Christ" does not happen overnight.
It is a process, just as salvation itself is a process of past, present, future.  We are not immediately perfected in love
and there is a lot of fear lingering in most professing believers.  Y2K and our medical issues should be a good
indication of this.  Also the tangled mess of emotions many families must work through.

An object lesson is given us in scripture ... when after Israel celebrated the passover and God led them supernaturally
to the promised land.  They were instructed to go in and take the land which He would give to them little by little. He did
not clear the land all at one time because they would not be strong enough to hold it. (Exodus 23:29,30)

Likewise when we surrender our lives to Christ we also have enemies on the land (our heart) ... Those of us who are
honest will admit that we were walking in most of Galatians 5:19,21 if not all.  That the land of our heart is inhabited
by some enemies is evident by what comes out of our mouths (at times).  God has promised to give us the land when
we are faithful to work with Him - and the change just like with Israel is little by little - the goal being Galatians 5:22,23.
If you have never battled idolatry, fear, anger, selfish ambition, dissension, etc. David then I would have to say you are
the first person I have ever encountered like this.
