We have no idea if you are misinterpreting a modern scholar, or if you are reading a modern scholar who has misinterpreted another modern scholar. And the point of my post remains. I have asked you for your authority. Why do you withhold his name? JD wrote: > Is not Hippolytus' opinion a second hand opinion? His writing on this subject is among the oldest that we might consider. Is it "second hand opinion"? Perhaps, but he would be considered a primary source for whatever modern scholarship you are considering. You have quoted nobody that contradicts Hippolytus. By the way, Hippolytus did not declare himself an antipope. They had no popes back then. Many modern authorities consider him the first antipope, but such characterization is based upon the acceptance of Roman Catholic history and how one wants to spin history. If you read some Jewish history, you will find some who write of Jesus as being an anti-Messiah. Peace be with you.
