Hm, what about using BufferedImage and Jimi.  Have you tried that stuff?
That does not require an X server.  (Im guessing you are using the AWT
classes).  I have been using that, and that is completely stable (on W2K).

On a related note, I have some pretty primitive graph classes myself.  Is
this something we might wish to contribute to the ever extending
turbine.util collection?
