I looked at Jimi, but I don't think it obviates the need for an X server
on Linux. AWT on W2K doesn't need an X server anyway.

Sounds like a great plan - unfortunately the graphing code I've based my
code on has a GPL-like license. I've written to the author (who doesn't
seem to be maintaining his code) asking permission to release the code
under the Apache license, so I'll let you know...
