Looking at it again on the 1280x1024 my preference would be that only the sidebar is sticky. Main reason for side bar preference is that it contains the search option, but also like the "Previous topic", "Next topic" as shown on Sphinx doc.
If we agree on not having a fixed top bar, I would also put the search field in the sidebar. Otherwise I'd put it in the top bar.
One thing I found disturbing is the "show source" option provided by Sphinx showing the source of the current doc page. This can easily be misunderstood as "show Python source of the examples discussed on this page". So I vote for removing these links or at least make it much less prominent as in the default template.
