I thought of Letterman when I was watching that bit the first time,
but I realized that, if he did anything like that, it would have been
one of his regular guys for walk-on bits instead of actual audience
members. And probably looked far worse than a shiny, new
lawnmower/printer/fishbowl.

However, the one thing that makes it seem Letterman-esque is that it
made it on air because someone, somewhere thought it was funny, even
though it pretty clearly wasn't. (And I say this as somebody who
enjoys "Will It Float?", though out of a sense of scientific curiosity
more than for its humor.)
