Perhaps this was the straw that broke the camel's back. There's also a difference in the timing; most, if not all, of the SNL stuff was during the 2008 campaign, when there's practically a federal law that says comedians have a free pass to say pretty much whatever they want, since their targets will look petty if they complain about it. There's also the "rising above it" tack, which works, to a point.
But what do you do when you return to your normal life and they're still coming after you? Even Monica Lewinsky is pretty much left alone today, unless you count the occasional item in the Gawker Media sites. AKAIK, Sarah Palin was attending a public event as a private citizen with her family. Now maybe there's a story---and a couple of jokes---if it's found out that she went on the dime of the Alaska citizenry, but for crying out loud, if you can't attend "America's Pastime" with your family without being mocked in some way (intentionally or otherwise), then what can you do? As for the political motivation, I wasn't aware Governor Palin was running for an elective office in 2009, and if she's running for one in 2010 or 2012, then this is a poor way to score points, since only her hardcore supporters will even remember this dust-up by that time. _____ On Jun 15, 10:05 pm, David Bruggeman <[email protected]> wrote: > This was not the first joke about Governor Palin's brood getting knocked up, > so the selection of this joke at this time suggests that the Governor's > outrage is manufactured.
