I'd like to see a network rerun full episodes of Carson's "Tonight
Show" Monday through Friday (not "Carson's Comedy Classics" or the six
or seven anniversary shows licensed for cable and syndication. If
memory serves, E! was able to generate buzz and moderate (for the
early days of cable) ratings by rerunning Dave's old show. I think it
would be great of USA or even CNBC (both NBCUNI cable nets) ran Carson
at 11:30 opposite whatever they decide to do on NBC. Let the Carson
estate choose 150 to 250 episodes out of however many thousand they
have in their underground vault and let somebody air them.

For those asking about what will happen when Dave leaves, I think that
is where the transition to a non-linear model of program distribution
will take place, rendering the question moot (I do so love the word
moot). Something I see happening sooner rather than later is the
utilization of DVRs or online recording/playback of content becoming
the norm as opposed to a set lineup of shows. Effectively an end to
scheduled programing (obviously, live sports and news events would
still air at preset times and days, but the rest of the schedule would
be fungible). I'm talking about eliminating the concept of networks
(broadcast or cable) and transitioning to a whole different model
where shows are available at the touch of a button (whether the button
is on a mouse or a remote control), and I see that happening within
the next five years. To that end, there wouldn't a replacement for
"The Late Show" because such a show (or such a title) wouldn't make
sense in that model. Frankly, I can't wait.
