I did watch it over the weekend. Those nuns really kicked ass, they were the highlight of the show. Underwood convinced me she really does have a nice voice, but what I had heard about her acting was actually overly generous. They may have been better off getting more mediocre supporting players just to make it a little less painful to watch. It did point out what a great job Julie Andrews does in the film with that role (though I assume making a film musical is a lot easier than a live show on the actors).
I watched the whole thing because I found it really interesting to see how the stage version differed from the film. I assume all the unfamiliar songs were original, and if so I see why they left them out of the film. But dramatically the stage version is superior to the film. Why did they soften the political, anti-Nazi parts to much for the movie? I wonder if it had something to do with support for West Germany? I see that the play premiered in 1959, the film in 1965. The Berlin Wall went up in 1961. I am not smart enough about staging and production issues to evaluate it like Jon interestingly did. As a general viewer, I was impressed that they pulled off such a complicated live show with no real glitches to speak of. And even televised, there is something thrilling about seeing live performances. You can tell those actors were really singing - they sometimes get a little out of breath, and the volume sometimes changes with an odd mis-step, all of which lends an immediacy to the performance that you don't get in movies or TV music performances. I definitely would not mind see the same production team tackle another (yes, hopefully better, less syrupy) musical. -- -- TV or Not TV .... The Smartest (TV) People!
