I don't think there is any real analogy between Conan and Fallon. Its not
just that they had Leno waiting in the wings - and their own insecurity
that they had made a mistake in replacing him. They had Leno sucking a
huge, really unprecdented, ratings hole in both their prime time and late
night line-up (it is only really in the last couple of years that NBC's
primetime has recovered from Leno), while at the same time whispering in
the ears of the affiliates he had sucked up to for decades that he belonged
back after, instead of before, the local news. I don't think there is any
way NBC cans Conan even with Leno in the wings if he had not been carpet
bombing their Prime Time. That had as much to do with saving local news
from the Leno-anchor as it did with raising the ratings of the Tonight Show.

Yes, the Tonight Show is a historical profit center, but it will continue
to be a profit center even with Fallon in a close second place to Colbert.
