I wonder if anyone here is watching this. I caught up with it over the last week, and keep getting reminded of David Milch's "John from Cincinnati". Nothing of course could make me as predisposed to be irritated with a show as it being responsible (in my mind at least) for the end of Deadwood, but I do get the same hit of irritation. There seem to be talented people invovled in the project, but they all seem hyper-aware of how important and profound they are supposed to be being, and clueless about how banal and boring they actually are being. Its worse too in that while I don't care about surfing, I do care this.
The show is based of course on the book by Knoedelseder. It is a factionalized account, which I guess was to allow them to embellish and make it more interesting without worrying about lawsuits, but instead encouraged them to overshoot and try to make it a metaphor, instead of just telling what is already an interesting story (though perhaps already frequently enough told) Here is Knoedelseder on Dave talking about the book, which just makes me wish it was him and not Jim Carrey invovled in the Showtime series: https://youtu.be/Hyr6LqBkNQM -- Sent from Gmail Mobile -- -- TV or Not TV ....
