I wonder if anyone here is watching this. I caught up with it over the last
week, and keep getting reminded of  David Milch's "John from Cincinnati".
Nothing of course could make me as predisposed to be irritated with a show
as it being responsible (in my mind at least) for the end of Deadwood, but
I do get the same hit of irritation. There seem to be talented people
invovled in the project, but they all seem hyper-aware of how important and
profound they are supposed to be being, and clueless about how banal and
boring they actually are being. Its worse too in that while I don't care
about surfing, I do care this.

The show is based of course on the book by Knoedelseder. It is a
factionalized account, which I guess was to allow them to embellish and
make it more interesting without worrying about lawsuits, but instead
encouraged them to overshoot and try to make it a metaphor, instead of just
telling what is already an interesting story (though perhaps already
frequently enough told)
