Conan usually gets two acts from his first guest usually--but he also doesn't do a 20-minute first act or a long desk bit in the second act, unless it's Clueless Gamer or another out-of-studio piece. Seems to me that Colbert's doing a 15-to-20-minute first act between the cold opening, the titles and the monologue (and sometimes a second act at the desk or, even stranger lately, him still standing up) and is forcing that stupid 30 seconds between the second guest and the last full act where they have the billboard for tomorrow or next week while the audience applauds for no reason over the band (since they aren't shooting the audience).
But it seems to me that Dave had that bumper-ish segment on his show, except that it was usually Alan Kalter reading the "Price is Right" ticket plug over the band playing that theme or something equally silly.
