Did you try this angle on them:
* an Ubuntu Hardware Certification is still very newsworthy and a
press release about certified hardware by company X will
probably make the headlines of most technology news sites and
even the "newsbits" pages of some PC magazines (at least, until
Ubuntu certification will be standard practice ;-) )
* these articles reach every reader of those sites, not only linux
users, but also (and currently mostly) Windows users, which are
still the largest customer base for the manufacturers
* "normal" publicity on all these places at the same time is a lot
more expensive than 2000 euro + the manufacturing price of a
laptop
That sounds like *bingo* for any large laptop manufacturer _and_ of
course also for Ubuntu and its users.
Oh well, okay, IANAM (I Am Not A Marketeer)... ;-)
