I think it's normal for the Live CD to not function on systems without more than 256 MB RAM. Try the Alternate disc, if you don't like Xubuntu. I'm running Ubuntu on a system w/ 256 MB ram, though I'd recommend Xubuntu. The reason that your ram is shown as 253 could be because some is being used for video memory (shared memory). In case you don't know, Xubuntu is just Ubuntu.
