I would also steer you towards Xubuntu for a machine with 256 MB RAM.
I have Xubuntu installed (using the Alternate install CD, not the
LiveCD) on a 800 mHz laptop that I have that has 128 MB of RAM. The
default environment (XFCE) runs okay (a little sluggish sometimes) on
that computer but to speed things up I use a Window Manager, usually
either FVWM-crystal or IceWM. Using these Window Managers makes this
old laptop run really good.
For your 256MB machine I would think that XFCE would work well, I
like XFCE and even use it sometimes on my best computer. XFCE is a
nice, solid environment in my opinion.

Have a good day,
James
