Ubuntu 8.04 supposedly needs 384MB of RAM to load and run successfully. Also,
Linux in general is not very tolerant of defective hardware. If you upgrade
your memory to .5GB, you should do just fine. For a lighter alternative, might
I suggest Xubuntu. Without the frills of the full-on Gnome desktop (Xubuntu
uses Xfce instead) and Open Office (Xubuntu loads Abiword), it takes less
horsepower under the hood to run, and is recommended for older hardware, or if
you want a sleeker, faster system.

Subject: New to ubuntu - RAM question...

Hi, I am brand new to ubuntu and have installed it on my desktop with
no problems. I want to install it on an older Dell Laptop that has
256RAM, when I try to load it, it says that I only have 253 (I assume
some may be corrupt or something). The program will not load up, it
does not give me the welcome screen (language, etc) at the beginning
and it hangs up after about five minutes of the CD ROM working. If I
upgrade the RAM in this laptop, should ubuntu work? Thanks
