I think you were just lucky, normally you have to pump the built in plunger
until you hear the injectors making noise.

I'm the guy who called and glad it worked out. The one advantage I had
heard about my cummins is that they will auto prime if you run dry. I
proved that once, at night no less on Lake Washington, when I ran a
tank dry. All I had to do was open a full tank and grind the starter
for about 15 sec and it worked.

I am saving the previous post however just it case I need it someday.
On my generator for example.
