Hi,

If you have a Cummins engine you differently have a hand primer on the
engine. I do not know of any Cummins engine that is self priming and for
that mater I have never seen any other marine diesel engine that is self
priming.

If you have a 210 engine, it is on the lift pump. It is about 1 1/2" round
and you push it down and it is spring loaded up. Depending on how bad you
ran out of fuel it will take about 50 +/- pumps up and down. You will hear a
faint squeak noise when it is pushing fuel into the injectors.
If you have a different engine it will be on the injector pump.

You can make life a littler easer by topping of your primary and secondary
fuel filters with fuel.

Once the engine is primed correctly, the engine will start immediately.

Cranking the engine will only burn out your starter, to give you more
enjoyment.

Guys my excitement was premature. I can get fuel up to the racors but not
past them. Where is this plunger you are talking about?

I think you were just lucky, normally you have to pump the built in plunger
until you hear the injectors making noise.

Kerry,

I'm the guy who called and glad it worked out. The one advantage I had
heard about my cummins is that they will auto prime if you run dry. I
proved that once, at night no less on Lake Washington, when I ran a
tank dry. All I had to do was open a full tank and grind the starter
for about 15 sec and it worked.

I am saving the previous post however just it case I need it someday.
On my generator for example.

Bob
