Hi – Couldn’t help but to chime in here. Years ago I used to often post as we
previously owned a 1973 31’ Uniflite (really great boats!). For the last many
years we’ve been spending our boating days out on our Tollycraft 34’ tri cabin
(great boats too!).

Reason I chimed in is to let you know the name/phone of an upstanding Kohler
dealer. We have 7.5 kW Kohler on our 1977 Tolly.

Subject: Re: [UnifliteWorld] Need advise on generator replacement

Great questions

First thing you have to decide is 1800 rpm or 3600. The 1800 is heavier but
quieter (and more expensive)

Next you need to decide between Westerbeke, Kohler, Cummings (Oman) or Northern
Lights

I went with Kohler (smaller and lighter) but have been really frustrated with
service (you have to go thru distributors for any technical questions).

If it wasn't for hot water, (assuming your stove and oven is propane, I could
have gone with a massive battery bank and huge "smart" alternators on the
engines. A bank of 8 golf cart from Costco supplies a lot of power.

I also put flexible solar panels on the upper canvas (generates enough power to
keep fridge going).

Good luck. Look thru Ebay for used units

I have a 1973 42' double cabin with twin cummins diesels new in 1990. My
generator however was the original 1973 Onan MDJE. I have nursed my generator
for years but it just had a major and I am sure final problem somewhere in the
generating unit. I now have to replace it. It was a 7KW but I have never used
more than 4000 watts at any time and it is mounted forward of the port main
engine. Any experience with removal and replacement out there? Advice on new
Model? Make Size? Thanks. I always valure this groups ideas.
