I got tired of my boating trip logs to be from home port to wherever the Onan broke down this time. I was advised by a couple of people whose opinion I respected that I should look at the Northern Lights. One of the big advantages is that it is not electronically controlled and if there is a problem it can be fixed by conventional electrical testing and not just keep replacing circuit boards (at several hundred bucks apiece) until it finally works again. Since my 42 Uniflite has a 30 amp AC system it would have been a waste of money to put more than a 5 KW unit in. Diesel engines don't like to be run at operating speed with too little load and it is just about imposable to load a 7.5 KW unit until it's happy, when you have a 30 amp system attached to it. With the 5 KW Northern Lights 30 Amps load it to 66% of capacity. I've had the unit in since February 2009 and have 838 hours on it as of this morning. Never a single problem, probably the most reliable system on the boat, and it's QUIET! I can hold a normal conversation in the galley without shouting and hand signals. Can't recommend the dealer I picked, but I sure like the unit.
