I found the problem causing Failed to open module "eq" in "/usr/local/lib/brutefir/eq.bflogic": /usr/local/lib/brutefir/eq.bflogic: undefined symbol: fftw_execute_r2r.
When installing brutefir on an x86_64 machine, the module library was incorrectly placed in /usr/lib/brutefir instead of /usr/lib64/brutefir.
