Gentoo is a very powerful and flexible tool in the hands of an expert - it
was my main distribution for home and work between 2003 and 2006. However
even with a reliable friend I would recommend against it for a beginner.
The problem is that it probably wont be viable for your friend to set you
up then let you take the wheel. Within six months or so your system is
likely to need expert attention again. Unless you are married to your
friend this could well prove inconvenient for you both.

Ubuntu looks like the obvious choice to me. Your friends Gentoo knowledge
will mostly still apply. The latest version 8.04 is an LTS (long term
support) release - with the 5 years support lifecyle your system could well
run maintenance-free until 2013
