As long as your friend is reliable, go with Gentoo.  

On the other hand, if you want to do a little learning while you're at
it, Ubuntu is pretty simple to setup and use.  I run the server version
on a laptop and the hardest thing in getting the setup working was
figuring out how to mount the filesystem the NAS drive with my music. 
Took a bit of reading (maybe 20 minutes) to get it straight and it's
been a rock since then.

Because we have a Debian repo for SqueezeCenter, apt-get works a treat
for updating the software.
