If you are building a SERVER you should never use the USB-drive connected like that on a regulary basis, as you should keep the server as protected from user-interaction as possible. You should rarely, if ever, need to be in physical contact with the server. A much better practice would be to connect to your server using Samba from your ordinary desktop computer using gigabit LAN and make the backup from there using some kind of sync tool (robocopy is the best tool for windows, and it comes with Vista and is a free download from MS for XP)so you just get the changed files and not everything.
