Using an external HDD for backup allows you to transport/store the
backup wherever you want- to parties, office, etc.  Keeping it off-site
is a good idea for reliable back-up.  If your house burns down (because
your server PC fails?) having a backup in the desk where the server was
sitting won't do you much good.
