Thanks for suggesting a direction here.  I am unfamiliar with linux
networking and share management. I googled 'Samba Slow' and found some
helpful suggestions.  I've made some changes to my SAMBA config and see
improved copy speeds of 170/kbs and better now.  I'll keep working at it
and then retry a rip across the network.
