I did google with 'Ubuntu Samba slow' and there seems to be quite a lot of posts, mainly network card drivers issues. If I were you, I would not even look at ripping till the network speed issue is resolved. One easy test would be to ftp a large file from Ubuntu to your XP, this will bypass Samba. Ugh... Don't want to ruffle you, but just to give you a scale how slow this is, I have 20 MB/s on wired NFS gigabyte network...
