Only talking about LVM here: it's as useful in data centers than it is
on average Joe's computer.
Why would most of the Linux distributions use it, otherwise?

Why would it break?
I've started using LVM in 2006 and hadn't a single problem with it
since then.

Maybe people also want to store DVD/BR rips or home made high def
videos?
Your 3TB disk won't last long...

Listening to music, obviously.
And that's why I've been using LVM for years: I don't need to dismount
my music directory to move its data from a disk to a bigger one. :)

Code:
--------------------
    # vgextend <VG> <newdisk>
  # pvmove <olddisk>
  # vrreduce <VG> <olddisk>
--------------------

Done, and without interrupting the music. ;)

If you cannot understand LVM is really handy, I can't help.
