Linux/Alsa. What else !?!? ;) I've looked up the implementation whithin MPD once. Looked not that complicated. Basically a PCM output to stdout. Fiddling around with those loopback devices I consider overkill. The only challenge would be different samplerates and bitrates. Brutefir can not apply different filters for different samplerates/bitdepth on the fly. Basically I'd have to use the squeezelite resampler before piping the data into brutefir.
