When I read you were going to try this, I kept my mouth shut. I know my eyes are not good enough any more. I have big issues with soldering tiny SMD components...... I really dont think there is much to be gained here. uboot and loading the kernel from boot partition on SDCARD are one time hits on boot, rather than continual access of the SDCARD, if you just put the root partition on a disk.......
