OK, minor update.
The Pi having the issue is an A, not a B as originally stated. (My B
rev2 works just fine with 1.21a). I just tried a different SD card,
burning a fresh copy of the image but 1.21a still does not recognise the
DAC: the only options available are Analog, HDMI and USB.
I certainly wouldn't spend time resolving this for my benefit since I
have it working under 1.16 and maybe only a few people will try using A
rev2 boards.

I have made a donation anyway for all your fine work: it's worth it to
brag when my Sonos-owning friends come round ;)
