Thought I'd post about what seems to be some instability on OSX
across a few different machines on pre G3 processors.
I have a machine that is being used for development for a piece of
software, to port it's functions to OSX (it's a UNIX based thing) & I have
let this person log into the machine remotely via SSH.
Over the first few days, the machine was very unstable, staying up,
but becoming uncontactable remotely, only working when using it actually at
the machine. After this, I inserted my G3/400 Powerlogix card & rebooted -
the thing hasn't missed a beat since. I did try refitting the 604e card &
cache, but it again became unstable.
So, for anyone who is looking at potentially running their machine
as a server under OSX I encourage you to at least get a low end G3
processor upgrade for it.
For your info, the machine in question is a 7300 with 320MB RAM,
PCI Ethernet card & 18GB Seagate HD, plus 4MB VRAM & onboard standard
video. I have fund much the same on a couple of 7600s but not on the 9600
as I don't have enough disk space.
