I currently have OS 10.2.8 running on my 8600 with a NewerTech G3/300 upgrade. I recently bought a 18 GB drive that I plan to install and use as my start up disk. So, I will be starting with a fresh install of X and I was hoping to get some advice on the best way to do it.

I don't have a 9.1 installation CD, so I will copy my 9.1 system folder over to the new HD. Then, I plan on upgrading to 9.2.2 and then install X over that. Should X be on it's own partition, or does it need to be with 9.2.2? If partitioning is the way to go, what would be the best scheme?

Thanks,

Kevin

If you plan t run X as your primary OS then I would consider streamlining the OS9.x system folder so it only contains the minimum number of Xtns and CDEVs required to run the applications you have to use 9 for. Similarly if you alternate between X and 9 then a second strategy should be considered.
Use above for OS 9 under X and have a complete functioning and bootable OS9.x on a second HD (or partition) - this at least gives you some hope of recovery should something go wrong.

As for 9.2.x you will also need helper file to install these onto old world powermacs. Go to htttp://www.os9forever.com and download helper/readme. Works in a similar (though not performing same sort of task) as Xpostfacto.

Another thing to consider is that X will only install into a drive of 8GB or less on old world machines (unless this has been fixed?) so yes you will need to partition it. And I would always recommend using apples disk tools - it may not be best out there, but again given the nature of how we install these things on legacy macs then it gives you more chance of data recovery/rescue should anything go wrong.

Bear in mind that you cannot boot X from CD on any unsupported Mac (again unless this has been fixed recently?) - I haven't looked for a while as my G5 1.8 is my X machine and 9600 G3300 is for OS9.2.2 ;-)

Hope these tips are of help/use

Simon
