In wordpress and in most other blog software you could just copy the
index and remove the style you don't want, and then import THAT into
your main page. Then you've still got the dressed-up copy running on
the main blog page.
What blog software did you end up choosing? I'm a fan of WP and
Nucleus...
I'm not sure what you mean by "copy the index and remove style" since
I'm just importing the url into the iframe. I'm doing this on our 1and1
shared hosting - their blog software is WordPress but doesn't allow you
to modify it so I'll probably install Word Press into the subdomain

just to follow up from all the suggestions here:
I did set up a separate subdomain for the blog, then put a link to
the blog in an iframe to show the blog on the home page. A nicer way
would be to have blog summaries on the home page that link back to
the blog domain but that's for another day.
Now to customize the blog to look nice in the iframe - is there a way
to turn on/off headers, calendar, etc.. in the link?
Thanks for the info!
