In wordpress and in most other blog software you could just copy the
index and remove the style you don't want, and then import THAT into
your main page. Then you've still got the dressed-up copy running on
the main blog page.
What blog software did you end up choosing? I'm a fan of WP and Nucleus...

blog in an iframe to show the blog on the home page. A nicer way
would be to have blog summaries on the home page that link back to the
blog domain but that's for another day.
Now to customize the blog to look nice in the iframe - is there a way
to turn on/off headers, calendar, etc.. in the link?
