just to follow up from all the suggestions here:
I did set up a separate subdomain for the blog, then put a link to the
blog in an iframe to show the blog on the home page. A nicer way would
be to have blog summaries on the home page that link back to the blog
domain but that's for another day.
Now to customize the blog to look nice in the iframe - is there a way to
turn on/off headers, calendar, etc.. in the link?
