Thanks everyone. To try and answer several questions in one reply.

Yes, I did make a different "Wall" material that had only one channel
(Color) and hoped that it would be as matte and non-glossy as
possible. It helped, but only slightly. (At first I didn't know what
the "Paper" material did.

A also made a new "Luminous" material that had only a (Self Luminous)
channel. as far as I could tell, that seemed no different in effect
than the "No Shader" material.

Yes, I also tried moving the self-luminous rectangle out of the
hierarchy and put all the other scene objects into their own lever to
which the GI material was applied. That didn't seem to change the
lighting.

I also tried what I had done in other software and rendered a separate
"Reflection" channel with unexpected results. The Reflection-channel
render seemed to show me the "reflectivity" of the materials in the
scene, and not any actual reflection. (I have done this in C4D with
good results for emphasizing a reflection in post-composting.) It also
took me a while to figure out how to do this in RS. The only file
format that seemed to support this was the native RS image format
which I can only open with its viewer. But from the viewer I can not
seem to separate and save the channels in any image format that is
useful for compositing.

I will try to post another comment with some images to show of some tests.

Sorry about all the bother,
Henry
