I have this same problem with midgard on recent versions of apache and
php4 with the following software versions and cases:

Software versions
        GLIBC 2.2.3
        Apache-1.3.19
        PHP4-4.0.6
        Midgard-1.4.1
        imap-2000c
        openldap-2.0.11
        OpenSSL-0.9.6a

First case
        When I loaded Apache with mod_php with modules PHP-IMAP and PHP-LDAP
        (all of them using SSL: Apache, php-imap and php-ldap modules)
        in a particular order, KABOOM, segfault on startup;

Second case
        When I loaded Apache with mod_php and mod_midgard with modules
        php-mysql and php-midgard KABOOM, segfault on startup;

I tried Apache without and with pthreads.

This is a still-unresolved problem. Any clues?
