Well, tonight I copied the 'user' directory from a working machine to the
problem machine, and openoffice came right up without any problem.   I
wonder if it doesn't have something to do with the 'quickstart' utility. (I
had it disabled in the copied 'user' directory.)  Anyway, as I have time, I
will experiment with it.  Thanks for the suggestions.  OO 3 is looking
really good.
