Yes, I failed to mention that I unchecked the import option, unchecked the
update automatically, and chose 'do not register', just as you mentioned.  I
also thought that it may be hanging on net access, so I tried installing on
another machine (disabled its ethernet card), and repeated the
before-mentioned options.  That installed successfully (on another machine). 
Thank you for the info on where the user data is stored.  That gives me a
few ideas to try.
