Last I heard of a British English version it was withdrawn because it was
quite badly broken and fixing it wasn't on the radar.

The language packs are not very easy to find, as stated in Martin
Hollmichel's post:
http://native-lang.openoffice.org/servlets/ReadMsg?listName=dev&msgNo=7929
and his subsequent creation of a list (including en-GB) at:
http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Download_OpenOffice.org_LanguagePacks
Unfortunately, the list hasn't been updated since 2.3.1

Where do you find mirrors for OOo? Are there links from the OOo web site?
Where please?

http://distribution.openoffice.org/mirrors/index.html#mirrors

Also, "./extended" sounds like *nix. I'd need a Windows version as, I think,
would the OP. Is there one? Where please? The UK Mirror Service site
http://www.mirrorservice.org/sites/download.openoffice.org/stable/2.4.1/
doesn't even have a "extended" directory.

Peter's use of "./extended" indicates a directory on the mirror server.
In the case of The UK Mirror Service, it is:
http://www.mirrorservice.org/sites/download.openoffice.org/extended
The direct link (watch for wrapping) to the en-GB language pack is:
http://www.mirrorservice.org/sites/download.openoffice.org/extended/2.4.1rc2/OOo_2.4.1rc2_20080529_Win32Intel_langpack_en-GB.exe
I don't know why the "rc2", but this seems to be the case for all packs.
I have installed this 2.4.1rc2 pack for a couple of people and it does
not appear to be broken.
The link for the 3.0.0rc1 Windows en-GB pack is on page 5 of:
http://www.mirrorservice.org/sites/download.openoffice.org/extended/3.0.0rc1

Hope this helps.

Dave

Please explain how a simple user, possibly even quite experienced, would ever find these sites by starting at www.openoffice.org and following clear unambiguous links in a purposeful manner ("I'm looking for a British English version"). Now explain the same to a newbie.

Why would a newbie go looking for mirrors? Would a newbie even know what a mirror is? Why is this stuff on mirrors and *not* on the main site? What are the mirrors reflecting?

Why doesn't the UK localisation appear in the list on the OOo "more platforms and languages" download page at <http://download.openoffice.org/other.html#en-US>? Or on the list of localisations at <http://projects.openoffice.org/native-lang.html>? The web sites you and others in this thread cite are obscure in the extreme. Unless I'm missing something obvious ...
