OK, I have enabled the nVidia drivers, and no change.

I'll try that later. I have Intrepid x86_64, and I don't see a 64-bit deb 
there. 

I keep poking at things, but still haven't hit on the secret. I am working just 
on page 11 (physical page 23). I figure if I can solve the problem on one page 
I can enable the changes on the other pages.

I think it is the frame. There is something screwy about the frame because when 
I move a table that prints fine in another column into the right column on that 
page (replacing an offending table) the replacement table now prints badly.
