I have to actually type in the suffix I need for the reformatting to work.

You didn't specify which operating system you run. However, please
read this page and the links it mentions, it *may* be the solution to
your problem (I don't know because I don't run OOo 3.0 yet):

this said, please also read this recent message (and have a look to
the slides linked from there) to know why continuing to send and
accept files in any proprietary format, unless one is really forced to
